On Saturday, September 4, every lover of art and culture is invited to visit the modern cultural forum “White Night”, the program of which this year was inspired by the 120th anniversary of the city poet Alexander Chuck. Visitors can look forward to events created in the mood of the poet’s anniversary, traditional forum events, as well as several urban objects and walking routes.
The theme of the White Night of 2021 is “Mirrors of Imagination”, which is borrowed from the poetry collection of the same name published by the poet Alexander Chuck in 1937. Chuck was a pioneer of modern Latvian, urban poetry, who still inspires creativity. On this night, cultural and artistic events will invite people to take to the streets and take a look in the imaginary mirrors of 2021 contemporary artists.
In honor of the poet, a number of events will take place in A. Čaka and Marijas streets, Ziedondarzs, places of Riga, which Chaks sang in his poetry. Among other things, visitors to the White Night are invited to choose one of Chak’s walking routes, listen to his poetry at the city’s environmental sites or watch the Dutch artist’s SKRYF and NYX installations write Chuck’s poetry lines in sand, in which the poet confesses his love for his city. – For Riga. Chak’s presence will also reign in Spīķeri quarter, where a film program dedicated to the poet has been prepared, but in Spīķeri concert hall – the show “New. Chuck. Listener ”.
Traditionally, “White Night” is unthinkable without attractive and appealing environmental installations. This year they can be seen on Bastejkalns, Esplanade and at Māra pond. Those interested are also invited to visit an interactive environmental object at the Academic Center of the University of Latvia in Torņakalns to rediscover the joy of working together.
On this year’s “White Night”, you can also visit several projects of the Riga Summer Culture Program – walking along Elizabetes Street along the Vērmane Garden, everyone will be able to enjoy the interactive installation “On the Light Wave”, visitors to Arkadia Park will be addressed by to be inspired by neon text installations “Say in neon. Riga”.
“White Night” continues the tradition, inviting to enjoy the contemporary art program “Survival Kit 12” in Pardaugava, the avant-garde music concert program “Sound Forest”, the events offered by the French Institute in Latvia, as well as video art and music interaction forces event “Videography XV”, which will take place this year In the Botanical Garden of the University of Latvia.

The White Night in Riga is part of the international European White Nights project, launched by five European capitals – Brussels, Madrid, Paris, Riga and Rome, and is now joined by cities around the world. The idea of the White Night is to make making art more accessible to the public by involving those interested in a variety of artistic events one night a year.
