Isabella Sanchez, the General Director of Events and Sports Facilities of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sports, attended the inauguration of ‘The Container’ at the Javier Imbroda Sports City of Malaga. This new sports space is dedicated to CrossFit and covers an area of over 1,200 m2.
During her speech, Sanchez emphasized the significance of the day, as they were inaugurating a new outdoor space that will enhance the sports offerings for the citizens of Malaga. She also highlighted that the new sports area will focus on functional and intensity work, making it one of the top facilities in the country among the more than 600 officially registered.
Sanchez further mentioned that ‘The Container’ is unique in Europe, featuring a seven-meter-high rope-climbing structure. Its design and configuration draw inspiration from the most avant-garde spaces in the United States, the birthplace of CrossFit.
‘The Container’ will be available for regular use by more than 65 people across various workstations. The equipment and software are designed for high performance and can accommodate top-level international events. The space has been exclusively configured by leading international companies in the sector, such as Eleiko and Technogym, who are official suppliers of the International Olympic Committee in multiple Olympic Games.
The new CrossFit space replaces a previous facility with four wall paddle tennis courts that had low performance and usage by athletes. The aim is to double the number of subscribers, increasing from 200 to 475.
CrossFit originated in 1995 when Greg Glassman opened the first center for the sports practice in Santa Cruz, California. The sport gained popularity in 2000 with the creation of the CrossFit trademark. In Spain, there were only six dedicated CrossFit facilities in 2011, which grew to 100 in 2014. Currently, there are more than 600 affiliated boxes across the country. The success of CrossFit can be attributed to its inclusivity, as it caters to people of all ages and physical conditions, with exercises tailored to each individual’s abilities.
The inauguration of ‘The Container’ at the Javier Imbroda Sports City of Malaga marks a significant addition to the sports landscape in the region, providing a state-of-the-art facility for CrossFit enthusiasts and athletes alike.
