The Consequences of Using Dark Mode on Mobile Phones: Vision Problems, Difficult Reading, Battery Savings, and Dyslexia Concerns

Currently, mobile phones may also display a dark screen with light colored text. However, opting for this visualization model can have some consequences for your health. Know more.

Mobile phones are a very important device in our life. We currently do nothing without them. And as we use them, we tend to customize them, to make them according to our preferences. One of these cases is the use of dark mode (or dark mode, in English).

We chose this content display model not only because it can help with reading at certain times, but also saves the device’s battery. However, despite these benefits, the use of dark mode can end up harming those who use it.

The list of consequences, as pointed out by the Magazine HD, can pass by eyestrain, dyslexia problems or difficulty reading. Know everything.

1. Vision problems

The use of dark mode on mobile phones can bring both benefits and complications. If you are in a dark environment, the best way to read mobile content is in the dark. But if you are in an environment with more lighting, it is best to choose to leave the cell phone in light mode. The use of dark mode in environments with a lot of light forces our vision to play a greater role in focusing on the content exposed on the device’s screen.

2. Difficult reading

In order to make reading a text displayed on the mobile phone easier, it must be in dark tones and on a white background. If the user opts for the cell phone’s dark mode, it is making reading difficult because reading text in light tones on a black background, and the tendency is for the pupil of the eyes to dilate to allow more light to enter, which will lead to a difficult perception of the content being displayed on the device.

3. Maybe it’s not really saving battery

A mobile phone that is in dark mode only saves battery if it is a model with an OLED screen. In case the mobile phone has an LCD screen, this phenomenon will not happen. This is justified by the pixels that are used in these types of screens. While in the OLED model, if you activate the dark mode, the pixels are turned off during use, thus saving the device’s battery, a mobile phone with the LCD model, when activating the dark mode, will not show any difference in the battery percentage , as the pixels will remain on, which means that there will be no energy savings.

4. It can make reading even more difficult for people with dyslexia

The screen in dark mode makes reading and viewing content even more difficult for people suffering from dyslexia. This problem is a “specific learning disability, which is characterized by difficulties in correcting and/or fluently reading words”, points out the CUF hospital website. Therefore, if children and adults with this disorder already have some difficulty in reading, by changing the way in which it is normal to visualize words, this will end up making it even more difficult for them to understand these words.
