The Consequences of the 2007 Gaza Battle and Israel’s Response

Al-Marsad newspaper: Journalist Abdul Rahman Al-Rashed commented on Hamas’ sudden attack on Israel and the continuation of clashes between them for the third day in a row.

Israel pays the price for the 2007 Gaza battle

Al-Rashed said in his article in Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper entitled “Israel pays the price for the 2007 Gaza battle.”

: That year, the Israelis were gloating over the fighting between Hamas and the Palestinian Authority in Gaza, which lasted 3 months. Hundreds died fighting the brothers, and the movement took control of the entire sector. Expelled Fatah members to Ramallah. Israeli media published pictures of some of them in their underwear in the streets after they fled to the West Bank.

Two warring Palestinian states

He continued: For Israel, the situation was very comfortable. Palestinians are busy fighting, and instead of two Palestinian and Israeli states, there are two warring Palestinian states. The unified Palestinian government collapsed, and Hamas appointed its judges and police, named Ismail Haniyeh its prime minister, and the Ramallah Authority named Salam Fayyad its prime minister. The Arab League and the European Union supported Ramallah, and Iran funded the Gaza group. Separation took hold, and the dream of a Palestinian state evaporated after that day.

A revolution in Palestinian life

He pointed out that the lives of Palestinians there turned into permanent misery with the closure of the crossings, and their livelihoods were disrupted. Tunnels were dug and Iran penetrated into the Strip and began raising its own groups, disciplining one another and preparing them for its needs.

Al-Rashed added: Despite the presence of the Hamas authority, the situation of vacuum, which Israel supported indirectly, by not enabling the legitimate authority to return and extend its influence in Gaza. Let us not forget that five years before Hamas took control, Israel had destroyed the capabilities of the nascent authority in Bethlehem and Ramallah, instead of strengthening them.

Gaza has been in a vacuum since 2007

He pointed out that since 2007, Gaza has been in a vacuum except for a military organization that competes with “Jihad” and does not recognize it. Vacuum, as in Libya, Yemen and Lebanon, as well as Afghanistan, is the first enemy of stability. It threatens the surroundings, not just the people of Gaza or Israel. A number of those who carried out armed operations against Egypt in Sinai infiltrated from Gaza, and even Hamas no longer held the dominant power with the emergence of Islamic Jihad and groups from Al-Qaeda.

If Israel aspires to stability

He continued: If Israel aspires to stability, it will need to reconsider its policy of disrupting the Oslo promise of the promised state, and re-deal with the Palestinian Authority, and there will be no peace and stability without a legitimate Palestinian government, which possesses real powers and is empowered by the international community.

The Palestine Authority sits with the spectators

He added: In the midst of the current war, all eyes are on Hamas and Israel, while the Palestinian Authority sits as spectators. The truth is that disrupting and weakening the Ramallah government is behind the growth of “Hamas” and “Jihad” in Gaza, as well as in the West Bank. Since the division, the authority has shrunk in terms of its capabilities, functions, and influence. The strangulation of the Palestinian Authority aims to prevent the establishment of a state for them, while limiting their influence in areas less than those agreed upon in Oslo (the Authority has influence over only a thousand square kilometers, out of more than 5 thousand kilometers in the Oslo Agreement, which is still outside its jurisdiction, in addition to the Gaza Strip). . By weakening the leaders of power, they cannot be expected to extend their authority and bear their responsibility. The safety of Israel is conditional on the security of the Palestinian territories. Like all countries in the world, it must enable the Palestinians to manage the affairs of their regions, which requires supporting the Authority, building its capabilities, and rehabilitating its capabilities over the years.

Israel cannot do what the Assad regime did

He concluded his article by saying: Israel cannot do what the Assad regime did and deport two and a half million Palestinians to Egypt, the only neighboring country. It will not tolerate its closure for additional years, under the authority of “Hamas” and “Jihad.”
