The Connection Between Sedentary Behavior and Dementia Risk: New Findings from Medical Records and Accelerometer Data

The researchers used medical records to determine that about six years after the trial, 414 of the participants had dementia.

In an analysis of accelerometer data, it was found that the risk of developing dementia increased if participants spent about 10 hours a day sitting still.

The risk further increased, with participants who sat for 15 hours having three times the risk compared to their more active counterparts.

The researchers noted that the amount of sedentary activity per day was not associated with the risk of developing dementia.

“While not yet fully understood, reduced physical activity causes a variety of negative effects, including weight gain, increased inflammation, and reduced blood flow to the brain,” he added.

“Combined, these factors can increase a person’s risk of dementia, likely caused by direct and indirect damage to brain cells,” said Keiland Cooper, a doctoral researcher in cognitive science and neuroscience at the University of California, Irvine.
