Jakarta –
A number of habits are risk factors for stroke. Starting from smoking habits, too much salt intake, lack of physical activity, to being overweight. What should not be forgotten is that the habit of staying up late and not getting enough sleep can also be a risk factor for stroke. Why?
According to a neurology specialist, Dr. Sigit Dewanto H, SpN, FINS, FINA, this condition of lack of sleep actually does not directly trigger a stroke, but rather indirectly. This means that lack of sleep triggers a number of conditions which then become risk factors for stroke.
“Lack of sleep, usually when we don’t get enough sleep, our metabolism is disturbed. So the correlation is easily affected by risk factors. So it’s not direct, but indirect. So the risk factors appear first. Like high blood pressure, sugar, all of that can appear. That’s the correlation with tiredness I didn’t get enough rest,” he explained when met detikcom in Central Jakarta, Wednesday (25/10/2023).
Dr. Sigit further explained that when you sleep, the cell regeneration process occurs in the body. If sleep is not going well, the regeneration process will not run well. As a result, body disorders including hypertension can occur.
Apart from lack of sleep, another thing that can trigger disruption of cell regeneration during sleep is the habit of snoring. The reason is that due to snoring, the body may not get maximum oxygen. This condition is known as Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA).
“So when you sleep, the good thing is that the cell regeneration process actually occurs. We work all day, our body cells are tired,” explained Dr. Sigit.
“Well, when we sleep, the cells should regenerate. They should be processed, appear. But because we sleep in quotes because we can’t get good oxygen, these diseases have appeared,” he concluded.
