The Connection Between Actors and Firefighters: Psychological Endurance and Communication Skills

Although it seems that the professions of an actor and a firefighter have nothing in common, it is not at all, because both actors and firefighters must have good psychological and physical endurance, as well as the ability not to get confused in stressful situations, reports FOX and “Fox Life”.

Both professions also require good communication skills. In other words, actors must be able to work with other brothers or sisters of the profession, the director and the film crew. On the other hand, firefighters must be able to effectively cooperate with other rescuers and victims in emergency situations.

However, the most important difference is, of course, that actors save lives and risk their lives only on the screen, but firefighters put themselves in real danger almost every day and often die in the line of duty.

The highest number of firefighter deaths in the history of the United States of America (USA) was in 2001, when the September 11 terrorist attacks in New York and Washington took place. In total, almost 650 firefighters died – 343 died saving survivors, another 300 died later from injuries and illnesses.

On September 11, when the world will mark the 22nd anniversary of the tragedy, the sixth season of “Fire Station 19” will premiere on Fox Life. The series tells the story of the brave employees of Seattle’s Fire Station 19, who risk their lives every day in the line of duty.

On the other hand, on September 12, the FOX channel will see the premiere of another intense plot series – “9-1-1: Texas” – the long-awaited fourth season, which will tell about Captain Owen Strand and his colleagues, who also save other people’s lives every day, while risking own. While waiting for the premieres of the latest seasons of both series, channels FOX and “Fox Life” invite you to get acquainted with celebrities who were firefighters before their acting careers!

The star of Tarantino’s films worked as a firefighter for four years

American actor Steve Buscemi became widely known for his roles in Quentin Tarantino’s Mad Dogs and Lubene. But before his brilliant Hollywood career, for four years – from 1980 to 1984 – he has worked as a firefighter. Buscemi left this job to follow his calling and become an actor.

On September 11, 2001, when hijacked planes crashed into the World Trade Center skyscrapers, Buscemi worked 12-hour shifts for several days to help search for survivors. It is not widely known because the actor did not want to draw attention to himself at this tragic moment.

The actor has also stated in an interview that he sees many similarities between the work of a firefighter and an actor. In other words, there are stressful conditions in both of them, in which you have to know how to save the peace and do your job.

Although he has not worked as a firefighter for a long time, the actor still actively supports the rescuers of New York. Namely, Buscemi regularly stops at the fire station where he once worked to talk to the employees. It should be noted that he does not come empty-handed and often treats his husbands with his wife’s freshly baked buns. He has also been seen marching for firefighters’ rights, participating in union meetings, and has made documentaries about the lives of firefighters.

Robocop” became a firefighter after the death of his best friend

20th century Robert John Burke, the star of the sequel to the late 1980s blockbuster RoboCop, was still active at the age of 62 as New York Volunteer Firefighter. He currently holds the rank of captain. He has also been involved in the activities of various organizations defending the rights of firefighters, as well as working in charitable foundations that help service veterans.

The actor, who appeared in many television projects, such as the father of Chuck Bass in the youth cult series “Intrigante” (“Gossip Girl”), decided to become a firefighter after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. That’s when his best friend, Captain Patrick Brown, lost his life. Burke, along with Brown’s brother, helped search for the brave firefighter, who was sadly found dead.

Burke realized he wanted to continue the work his friend had started. He helped with rescue and cleanup efforts at the site of the former World Trade Center Twin Towers, and later completed a training course to become a volunteer firefighter. It took two years. He was 41 years old and studied with 20-year-old boys, but he did not give up and graduated from the academy. He dedicates his work to the memory of a deceased friend.

An actor who worked as a firefighter for ten years

The veteran of American series, 74-year-old Jack McGee, dreamed of becoming an actor in his youth. However, at first he did not earn much from acting, so for ten years – from 1977 to 1987, he earned a living by working as a firefighter in the Bronx neighborhood of New York.

The actor can boast of more than 200 roles in both films and television. It should be noted that the roles of police officers or other employees of the internal affairs system are usually assigned to her in the series. However, he was most recognized for his role as New York Fire Battalion Chief Jerry Reilly in the TV series “Rescue me”. He appeared in three seasons of this series from 2004 to 2007.

But this was far from his only on-screen appearance as a firefighter, as he also starred in director Ron Howard’s 1991 drama “Backdraft”, who also voiced one of the characters

in the video game “Real Heroes: Firefighter”.

In interviews, the actor often remembers his youth, which he spent working at the depot, and believes that the job of a firefighter is one of the most difficult in the world. Humor has often helped him and his fellow firefighters endure the strain, as laughter was sometimes the only way to get through another hour or shift.

The performer of the role of Sherlock Holmes is now a volunteer firefighter

The great British actor Jonny Lee Miller, known for his role in the cult film “Trainspotting”, as well as the series “Elementary”, “Dexter”, “The Crown” and others, has completed a training course this spring and became a volunteer firefighter .

The 50-year-old actor himself told about it on Instagram account, adding a group photo with the other newly minted volunteer firefighters. He also added that he can’t wait to “serve my community.”

Miller chooses a five-month course at the New York Fire Academy and in the future will be able to put out fires, should they break out, on Fire Island, New York, where he lives. Namely, he has learned the techniques necessary to succeed as a firefighter. Miller is also trained in fire search and rescue, firefighting equipment, and driving a fire truck, among other things.

It should be noted that at the end of the course there was an exam in which the acquired skills were demonstrated, as well as applicants had to pass a written test on theory questions.

A firefighter who accidentally became an actor

To make the daily lives of firefighters look believable on the screen, the producers of the series attract consultants who follow up to make sure everything is like in real life. But not only. The creators of Fox Life’s Chicago on Fire went even further and cast real firefighters in the background. One such supporting actor in the beginning was Tony Ferraris. It should be noted that he had come to the casting together with a colleague, who, however, the producers did not like.

Although he was only a background actor, Tony was assigned to drive the fire truck on the first day of filming. He looked so convincing on the screen that he later played himself – the firefighter Tony – in the series.

In an interview, he recalled that the producers of the series quickly paid attention to him and soon his character was included in the script. In total, Ferraris appeared in 186 episodes of “Chicago Burning”, five episodes of its spin-off “Chicago Watch” and two episodes of “Chicago Fast”.

All you have to do is turn on the TV to live the stressful life of a firefighter. The eventful series “19. “fire station” premiere of the sixth season already on September 11, at 21.00 on Fox Life channel. Reuniting with the brave heroes of the series “9-1-1: Texas” already on Tuesday, September 12, on the FOX channel, when the fourth season premiere will take place!
