The Concept of Lifetime Licenses in Software: Beware of Version Limitations

When I bought the license I thought that if I bought a lifetime license, I was literally buying a license for life.

However, since a few years there are a number of software makers who have given their own twist to the concept of “lifetime”, by linking that period to the version you already had when you took out the license.

Here you can read what has changed at Vuescan. In my opinion, it comes down to the fact that after the date of purchase you can enjoy updates for free for a year and then you can pay an additional annual amount via a subscription.

I don’t even notice this at all. I bought my liftetime license on February 13, 2020 for 70 USD and it still works flawlessly with a download of 2023 (version vuex64-9.8.04.exe). But what isn’t can still come…

I’m withholding updates to newer versions now anyway just to be on the safe side.
