The Complicated Reality of Russian Athletes in World Sport: Challenges and Controversies

World sport cannot be isolated from Russian athletes, no matter how much the government of Ukraine would like it to be, President of the International Olympic Committee Thomas Bach said in an interview with CNBC TV18.

How hopeful that sounded, huh? But do not rush to rejoice prematurely, for Bach lies in the details.

The head of the IOC said that developed a formulaaccording to which athletes not associated with the Russian and Belarusian military and other government services will be allowed to come to the 2024 Olympic Games on an individual basis.

The flags of the two countries and their national anthems will be banned from the Paris Olympics. At the same time, Bach is determined to defend the rights of athletes, “unrelated to the conflicts in which their countries are involved.”

The IOC President clarified that the decision was made despite the insistent demands of the Ukrainian authorities to cut ties with everyone who has a Russian passport:

“We need to provide an opportunity for athletes who do not support the war and who are not associated with the Armed Forces or other services, located in Russia or Belarus to compete. They will be presented at the Games as individual and neutral athletes, but not as representatives of their own country».

Bach claims that the system that we now see works at the World and European Championships. Kyiv is not 100% happy about this, but he accepted it, because this is an opportunity for Ukrainian athletes to qualify for the Olympic Games.

“We all want a strong Ukrainian team in Paris in 2024. Therefore, I return to values, because they underlie our decision, ”summed up the head of the IOC.

This cunning herr Bach said a lot of things there, but those are bureaucratic trifles. Main: at the Olympics in Paris there will be no Russian anthem, Russian flag, Russian coat of arms, Russian teams.

But there will be (in plain, mouse-colored suits) some suspicious citizens living in Russia, but, according to the IOC, not representatives of Russia. Just some individual substance, without a coach, school and doctor.

These citizens know that their friends and compatriots from CSKA, Dynamo, and the National Guard are not allowed to the Games.

But, apparently, citizens don’t give a damn about such trifles. The main thing for them is to see Paris. God be their judge…

Meanwhile, the press service of the National Olympic Committee of Denmark reports that the Olympic and Paralympic Committees, as well as the national sports federations of the Nordic countries, opposed the participation of Russians and Belarusians in the 2024 Games in the current realities.

This issue was discussed at a meeting with the participation of representatives of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Greenland, the Faroe Islands and the Åland Islands:

“We firmly stand on our position not to allow Russian and Belarusian athletes and officials to participate in international sports competitions. Now is not the right time to consider their return.”

This is such a hello to Bahu, so far at the level of not very cool countries. But very soon the “heavy artillery” will also join. And the German plan to sit on two chairs will collapse: like, he showed independence and allowed the Russians to the Games, but not in the status of Russians.

And the last one for today. On September 4, it became known that the International Swimming Federation allowed athletes from Russia and Belarus to take part in competitions in neutral status.

But World Aquatics said in a statement:

«For neutral athletes and their support staff will not be allowed to pass through the mixed zone or participate in any press conferences during international water sports competitions. They will also not be allowed to give any media interviews. during these tournaments.

No brainer that neutral-individual citizens will swallow this muck. And here the question quite reasonably arises: if they are ordered to perform without swimming trunks and swimsuits, will they agree?!
