The organizer of the General Latvian Song and Dance Festival, the Latvian National Cultural Center (LNKC), announced the competition in September 2021 and received one application for an artistic concept. The competition took place in two rounds. In the first round, the commission reviewed and evaluated the concept submitted in accordance with the regulations, maintaining the anonymity of the participants, while the second round was a negotiated procedure during which the artistic team presented the submitted creative plan and the content of the applied repertoire.
According to LNKC, on January 7, the commission, summarizing the evaluation obtained in both rounds, approved the concept created by the artistic director Kristīne Dmitrijeva, director Sanda Kalniņš and scenographer Mārtiņš Blanka entitled “River of Time”. The XXVII General Latvian Song and XVII Dance Festival will mark the 150th anniversary of the tradition. The creative team wants to discover and show the great power of tradition and folk song, which can be both a custodian of identity and a witness of a bright age.
The application of the artistic idea states: “To intertwine the ancient with the contemporary, to allow the ancient folk song to break the time of an ever new bed, to seek the source, to strive for the pure, to discover one’s true sound, merges with nature, whose momentary variability holds the eternal voice of revelation not only songs, but also the fate of the people. It’s the emotional flow and direction of the concert. “
The chairman of the competition committee established by LNKC was Juris Jonelis, the chairman of the choir’s big concert “Tīrums. The Way of the Song ”director; Anda Eglīte, Chief Conductor of the Riga Region Kokle Ensembles, Lecturer at the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music, Teacher of the Olaine School of Music and Art, Artistic Director of the Kokta Ensemble of the Riga Municipal Association of Cultural Institutions “Ave Sol”; Valda Bagāta, head of the woods ensembles of the Pieriga region, pedagogue of the Babīte Music School, head of the Babīte woods ensembles “Balti” and “Dzītariņi”; Dita Neilande, teacher of kokle playing at Mārupe School of Music and Art, teacher of kokle playing at Jāzeps Mediņš Riga Music High School and Rūdolfs Baltiņš, freelance artist, set designer.
