The Compatibility of PV Systems with Listed Church Buildings: Assessing the Cultural Impact

PV systems on listed church buildings are not ruled out in principle, but they do require careful testing. This was recently explained during a discussion between the Diocese of Linz, the State of Upper Austria and the Federal Monuments Office. In Upper Austria there are already 180 PV systems on church buildings – and the trend is continuing.

Of course, there will be no photovoltaic system on the roof of the Mariendom in Linz in the future either, according to Economics Minister Markus Achleitner (ÖVP). But on a number of other church buildings that are also listed, this is definitely possible and already the case, says Achleitner: “On the many vicarages that we have, on many church buildings, whether it’s kindergartens or care facilities. Everything that is virtually in stock is assessed individually.”

“Everything works – it’s not possible”

A careful examination of each individual building is important to determine whether a PV system is compatible with monument protection or not, emphasizes Petra Weiss, specialist director of the Federal Monuments Office: “We have to reassess this again and again – and that is the challenge. It’s not possible to say it goes anywhere.”

180 photovoltaic systems have already been installed on church buildings in Upper Austria, many of which are listed. More are to follow. For the Linz diocesan bishop Manfred Scheuer, this is, as he says, a clear commitment to climate protection and the preservation of creation for future generations.
