The company is worth a billion dollars, hardly anyone plays its stupid game

Blockchain technology, or if you prefer blockchain, has undoubtedly changed the world, as cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin or ethereum could be created. The question is whether they changed it for the better. Pznivci highlights their decentralization, the virtual economy is therefore not subject to a small political death, according to anonymity and zero commissions to banking institutions. Opponents, on the other hand, criticize its fluctuating value, lack of support for the black market and, last but not least, its non-ecological nature, when humanity wastes precious energy resources to generate ones and zeroes.

Decentraland promises to be a place to meet bees, but it is fast becoming empty.

The use of the blockchain is still a long way off and video game publishers have been working on it for years. Unfortunately (or maybe not) no one knew how to do it so that, in addition to businessmen and dreamers, the game itself was also interested. Last year, Ubisoft showed how it can’t seem, for example, its plan to sell NFT cosmetics has failed catastrophically.

At least from a financial point of view, the Decentraland project presents many challenges. Simply put, it’s a free 2 game online game where you create a virtual avatar and meet the birds. They can go to concerts (for example, Grimes or DJ Deadmau5 performed at Decentraland), or to monthly tours of various foreign companies (for example, Dolce & Gabbana, Tommy Hilfiger) or play simple games. You can then buy clothes for your character, tickets for exclusive events or plots of land on which to build your virtual home.

In many ways, Second Life has been around since 2013 and hasn’t changed the world.

On the daddy it looked cute and many saw the future of the gaming industry in it.In 2015, when Decentraland was first launched, a building plot was sold for $ 20 (about 500K), in 2021 it was sold to 6 thousand dollars (about A). Samsung, Adidas, Atari, Pricewaterhouse Coopers and others spent a lot of money on their presentation, one real estate company even bought land for $ 50 million (they wrote we are here). However, it is becoming increasingly clear that the decline in return on investment is in the long run, in the current form of this game, many financial speculators will be interested, but not a normal game.

Last year, a video of a bizarre gaming rave party went viral on Twitter, in which a handful of crappy animated characters run around the flashing corners of the room. Therefore, Decentraland didn’t come close to what popular rapper Travis Scott did twice ago in Fortnite (see they live).

In January of this year, analytics firm DappRadar surprised everyone when it found only 38 people playing the game every day.

I’m just looking for reasons not to play Roblox with its huge community.

Decentraland opposed this claim and offered more support. If the team wanted to reassure their customers, they probably couldn’t. At the time of writing, the game had 56,697 active users, about 7,000 per day, with many returning to it repeatedly. It’s serious, but it’s nothing, they should probably be proud of it. For comparison, not even a hundred of the most popular games on Steam and the 10+ year old Left 4 Dead 2 would be enough. The current hit Fortnite is played by around 3 million people every day, and the Roblox open platform is ten times more popular.

And where did those 38 individuals come from? These are the people who participated in the gaming economy on a given day and made their mark on the blockchain. Sam Hamilton, creative editor of Decentraland, explained the situation to the magazine CoinDesk as follows: DappRadar does not track our users, only the people who communicate with the economy. Imagine just following the number of people who pay for something at the checkout in a shopping mall. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t many passersby.

He may be right in his own way, but the company that invested in the game probably didn’t care. A daily reach of just 7,000 games wouldn’t help even a small video game website, and for giants like Adidas it’s just spitting in the face. And they would buy game plots for people, when then you have no one to brag about.

If there is no interest in the game among people, it is just an interesting experiment that will bring profits to only a handful of supporters, while the property of others will be completely worthless. Creators should now take care of creating free content for the audience they want to voluntarily return to.

The mere promises of a timely revolution do not interest these people, as Mark Zuckerberg has convinced others, his company Meta, which runs Facebook, experienced the largest intraday decline in the US stock market in January of this year (see connect business colleagues). Metaworlds are humanity’s possible future, pay and pay, and Decentraland hasn’t shown much of this in its seven years of existence.
