The Community requests that the weight of the Region’s exports to the United Kingdom be taken into account for the distribution of the Brexit fund

It also asks the Secretary of State for Commerce that communities can have Next Generation Funds to promote the process of digital transformation of small businesses

Regional exports grew by 9.98 percent in 2019-2020 while national exports decreased by 10.81 percent

The Community has asked the central government to take into account the weight of exports from the Region of Murcia to the United Kingdom in the distribution of the Brexit readjustment fund, to strengthen and improve customs facilities in the Region. This was transmitted today by the Minister of Enterprise, Employment, Universities and Spokesperson, Valle Miguélez, to the Secretary of State for Commerce, Xiana Méndez, during a work video conference, in which she also presented some keys to the evolution of regional foreign trade with the United Kingdom during 2020.

Thus, he highlighted that the Region of Murcia sold goods to the United Kingdom worth 945.98 million euros, emphasizing the interannual evolution, in which Murcian exports rose 8.82 percent, while national exports to this destination fell 14.46 percent.

The counselor assured that “the Region of Murcia is a region with an export and international vocation. Since the internationalization program was launched, the volume of exports has multiplied by three.” Given these data, he stressed that “it is essential to continue working to increase the number of exporting companies in the Region, an aspect that will be key in the development of the 2021-2027 Foreign Trade program, but for which we also need help.”

In this sense, he considered that it is “something fair” to request that at the time of the distribution of the Brexit readjustment fund, it be in proportion to the export capacity of the community to the United Kingdom.

The counselor also asked the Secretary of State for Commerce the need for the autonomous communities to have Next Generation Funds to promote the process of digital transformation of small businesses.

Increase in exports

In volume (thousands of tons), Spanish exports to the United Kingdom decreased by 10.81 percent in 2019-2020, while regional exports grew by 9.98 percent, due to the increase in canned fruit and vegetables or wines.

Among the destination countries for Murcian exports, the United Kingdom is in the number three position, remaining, as is traditional, among the top five positions in the regional ranking. Likewise, the weight of regional exports to the United Kingdom, in relation to the national total, was 5.56 percent in 2020.

A total of 537 companies carried out export operations to the United Kingdom, which represents an increase of 367 percent over the previous year, and in the ranking of autonomous communities, the Region of Murcia occupied the eighth position in 2019.
