The Community of Madrid launches a campaign to donate blood

The Royal Post Office will host the blood donation campaign to have forecasts for the holidays

The Community of Madrid, through the Transfusion Center, will organize at the end of this week a special blood donation device at the Royal Post Office – headquarters of the regional government to increase reservations for the summer. It will be next June 25 and 26 when the interior courtyards of this building will host a display of 16 donation stalls that will be active simultaneously each day.

Citizens who want to donate by collaborating in solidarity in this extraordinary campaign, must access the facilities on Calle San Ricardo. This macro blood donation point will open on Friday at 10:00 a.m. and on Saturday, one hour before, at 9:00 a.m., and will operate uninterrupted until 8:00 p.m. both days.

Registry

The objective is to obtain 3,000 blood donations both through the special device organized at the headquarters of the Community of Madrid and through the rest of the active donation points in the region: 28 public hospitals, mobile units, the Transfusion Center and the Red Cross room on Calle Juan Montalvo, 3. The location of the different rooms and their operating hours can be found on the website that can be found by clicking here.

Thus, it is expected to reach an optimal level of blood reserves to face the summer, a period in which traditionally a decrease in blood donations is registered as a consequence of vacations and population movements to other destinations.

The region needs 900 donations a day to cover all the needs

It should be remembered that last January the Community of Madrid already enabled an exceptional device in the Royal Post Office due to the Filomena snowstorm, with a spectacular response from the public.

Although hospital demand has been lower, for weeks it has not stopped growing. Daily donations, however, have progressively decreased to an average of 650 per day, compared to the 900 that the Community of Madrid needs to meet the needs of health centers and keep reserves in optimal condition.

The pandemic affects blood donations

The COVID-19 pandemic and the preventive measures that have been established to deal with it have affected blood donations obtained both in hospitals and in mobile units. In the case of hospital centers, restrictions on patient monitoring and visits have led to a decrease in the number of potential donors and, furthermore, the suppression of the traditional donation “marathons” that they hosted periodically has prevented the obtaining of 10,000 extra blood bags / year.

Regarding mobile units, the elimination or restriction of face-to-face teaching in universities and teleworking have prevented or significantly reduced the collections that were made in these areas. And with the absence of the Metro Campaign, another 3,000 donations stopped being obtained.
