2022 is certainly the year in which online scams have unfortunately had the most success, in fact according to estimates the average losses are around 2 thousand euros per person, a truly disheartening figure, especially if we consider that the trend seems to continue to rise .
Online scams most often exploit the ingenuity and fear of people who, having never had complete training on the use of the internet, are the perfect victims for scams, scams and frauds. The case of the Revenue Agency is quite emblematic, here’s what the message says and how best to defend yourself against the bad guys.
Many fraudulent attempts have recently been reported by criminals who, taking advantage of the name and fame of the Revenue Agency, attempt daily to reach the bank accounts of the victims through an excuse. The email reached many Italians, therefore it is only one of the many attempts to theft of data and money recorded in 2022.
In this specific case, the email would warn of a refund that would appear to have failed, so to receive the money the victim would have to access the link attached to the email, entering their data so as to be able to hypothetically receive what is rightfully theirs, falling in their dangerous trap.
The text of the message that is circulating in the inboxes is: “We hereby inform you that in an attempt to refund the account the operation was not successful. We then encourage you to log in to your refund portal to manually process your refund and you may update the information provided during the process.”
Fraud by the Revenue Agency, from communication to theft
If the recipient of the email agreed to enter the link provided by the message, he would find himself in front of a site very similar to the official one of the Revenue Agency, so he would proceed with entering his sensitive data such as residence, telephone number, but also photocopies of documents and even bank credentials.
The destination site of the attached link is nothing more than a fake, behind which scammers are hiding, ready to collect any information that is spontaneously sent to them through deception. In this way they will be more than free to proceed with wire transfers, data trading and identity theft and money theft.
To protect yourself from these scam attempts, it is good to check communications and ask yourself a few questions:
- Does the sender usually send uncertified mail?
- Does the communication make sense?
- Is the text written correctly?
- Is the content of the communication truthful?
In case of doubts, it is always better to contact the sender of the email directly, asking for specifics and, if necessary, notifying of the scam that is starting to circulate on the web.
