Today, The Ottawa Hospital presented the City’s Finance and Economic Development Committee with plans for its new Civic campus.
The Ottawa Hospital has taken a new step in the planning of the campus, which is scheduled to open in 2028. The establishment will then become one of the largest state-of-the-art hospitals in Canada and will offer its services to the populations of Ottawa, eastern Ontario, western Quebec and Nunavut.
The Ottawa Hospital has presented to the Ontario Ministry of Health the second phase of the capital planning process for the development of the new campus. As part of the follow-up to this submission, The Ottawa Hospital presented the proposed design to the Committee today. The organization will also be holding consultations in the coming months to give members of the public an opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback on the proposal.
The new campus will house Ottawa’s most modern trauma center. The main hospital building, which will house the emergency department, care units and outpatient services, will be located at the top of the escarpment in front of Dows Lake. The lower part of the lot will be reserved for other clinical rooms, doctor’s offices, teaching and research buildings and a multi-storey parking lot, all connected to the Dow’s Lake station.
The cost of the project is estimated at 2.8 billion dollars. The project will boost the region’s economy by generating some 20,000 new jobs, research and training opportunities and investments in health. Once opened, the hospital will create a world-class health care system in Eastern Ontario that will attract health care providers, researchers and students from around the world.
The Committee also approved the 2021 levies as presented for the Mississippi River Valley and Rideau Valley Conservation Authorities.
The recommendations presented at today’s meeting will be forwarded to City Council on Wednesday, May 12.
