The Combo of ‘Flurona’, how common is the Influenza and Corona Virus Combo?

Jakarta

The outbreak of the Omicron variant has not been resolved yet, now there is a commotion about the finding of the ‘Flurona’ case, which is infected with a combination of the influenza virus and the Corona virus. The case was found in a 30-year-old woman who was pregnant, undergoing treatment at Rabin Medical Center, Israel, before giving birth.

It is known that the woman was not vaccinated against COVID-19.

“We are treating him with a combination of drugs that target the coronavirus and flu,” said Arnon Wiznitzer, director of the department of gynecology at Beilinson Hospital in the Israeli city of Petah Tikva.

The patient is in good condition. However, the Israeli Ministry of Health continues to highlight the case to ensure the risk of severe symptoms in people who contract the Corona virus and influenza at the same time, especially if they are not vaccinated against COVID-19.

“We are seeing a growing number of influenza morbidity among the maternity population, along with cases of coronavirus which are mainly occurring in women who have not been vaccinated against the coronavirus and influenza,” Arnon said.

“This is definitely a challenging time besides the coronavirus disease, we are increasingly dealing with the flu,” he continued.

‘Flurona’ can be common, but it’s worth noting

Director of the School of Public Health at Ben-Gurion University in Israel, Nadav Davidovitch, added that with the high number of influenza cases, there is indeed a high risk of someone being infected with the influenza virus and the Corona virus at the same time. He emphasized that this Flurona needs attention.

“I don’t think this is going to be a common situation, but it’s something to consider,” said Davidovitch, who is also a member of Israel’s National Advisory Committee on COVID-19.

“It’s interesting that once you go through a year with very, very low or no influenza activity, the next year because people are less exposed, it makes them more susceptible.”

Finally, according to him, for people who do not have a history of certain health problems and have been vaccinated against influenza and COVID-19, there is a small risk of this ‘Flurona’ virus combination causing severe symptoms.
