The combined Windows and Linux botnet is used for overload attacks

Microsoft security researchers have discovered reports a hybrid botnet, MCCrash, which is a mix between Windows and Linux systems Ars Techinca.

The botnet is to be used by hackers to sell targeted overload attacks against various Minecraft servers.

MCCrash should be hardcoded to work on Minecraft version 1.12.2, but it should also work for version 1.7.2 up to 1.18.2. Something that means around half of all Minecraft servers in the world can be affected. However, Minecraft version 1.19 contains a modification that protects against attacks.

The majority of devices entered into the botnet are said to be in Russia at the time of this writing. The botnet is said to be particularly adept at exploiting IoT devices, and infections often occur through Windows machines that have programs installed claiming to license Windows.
