EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ – The legendary rivalry between Ohio State and Michigan will add a new chapter next year, but in NHL style with the Columbus Blue Jackets and Detroit Red Wings replacing the Buckeyes and Wolverines.
Ohio Stadium, the 102,780-seat football stadium on the Ohio State University campus in Columbus, will be the home stadium for the Blue Jackets when they play in the 2025 Navy Federal Credit Union NHL Stadium Series on Saturday, March 1, 2025 play against the Red Wings.
The NHL announced next season’s Stadium Series game during the first intermission of the 2024 NHL Stadium Series game between the Philadelphia Flyers and New Jersey Devils at MetLife Stadium on Saturday.
The league said additional details, including the date, time and broadcast information, will be announced at a later date.
It will be the first outdoor NHL game for the Blue Jackets.
The Red Wings have already participated in four games of this type. They have a record of 2-0-2 and last appeared at the NHL Centennial Classic in Toronto on January 1, 2017.
Detroit has three former Michigan players on its roster in forwards Dylan Larkin, JT Compher and Andrew Copp. Blue Jackets forwards Adam Fantilli and Kent Johnson and defenseman Zach Werenski also played at the University of Michigan.
The Red Wings hosted the most attended game in NHL history, the 2014 NHL Winter Classic, on January 1, 2014 at Michigan Stadium, home of the University of Michigan football team, as 105,491 fans watched Toronto win 3-2 Maple Leafs vs. Detroit after shootout.
According to the NCAA, Ohio Stadium is currently the third largest college football stadium in the United States behind Michigan Stadium (107,601) and Beaver Stadium on the Penn State University campus (106,572).
Ohio Stadium is 180 miles from Michigan Stadium.
The largest attendance at an event at Ohio Stadium was 110,045 for a football game between Ohio State and Michigan on November 26, 2016.
The stadium, known as the “horseshoe” because of its shape, officially opened on October 7, 1922 with an Ohio State football game against Wesleyan University. It is the 12th oldest college football stadium in the United States.
The rivalry between Michigan and Ohio State dates back to 1897. The game was played annually between the two schools between 1918 and 2019 before the series was suspended in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and resumed the following year.
The NHL had already announced that the Chicago Blackhawks will host the St. Louis Blues at Wrigley Field in Chicago next season for the 2025 Discover NHL Winter Classic.
