Kardzhali attracts the most new residents, Gabrovo overtakes Sofia in terms of absorbed European money, Silistra is the biggest library lover, and in Montana – on the contrary, there is not a single large library. Pernik produces the most garbage, but also treats and recycles practically all of it. For RES, you have to go to Pazardzhik. These curious details jump out from the the profiles of the regions in our country, prepared for the 12th time by the Institute of Market Economy and published this week. We are used to seeing in the statistics that Sofia and the rest of the country are two almost different countries, but the picture of Bulgaria is actually very colorful and unexpected leaders emerge in every sector of life.
In the competition for vacationers, for example, it is clear that Burgas and Varna are without competition. Burgas is one step ahead of the sea capital with more beds per capita and more overnight stays. Beds are 375 per 1,000 people, with 55 for the country and 144 for Varna. It should be expected that the largest share of people employed in the field of culture, sports and entertainment should be in the tourist centers, but in fact all of them are overtaken by Haskovo region. Here, 2.41% of the employed are in this sector compared to 1.44% for Varna, 1.17 for Burgas and 1.42 for Sofia.
Varna loses the competition in tourism, but “wins” second place in crimes – 14.5 per 1000 compared to 11.6 for the country. The detection rate of crimes is 39% (compared to 49% in the country) and is the second lowest after that in the capital. The unenviable first place in terms of crimes goes to Vratsa with 16.40 per 1000. In third place is Vidin with 14.10 per 1000. Kardzhali and Smolyan have the least number of crimes relative to the population – 5.10. The difference between the former and the latter is almost three times.
There is also a surprise in the number of students per capita. The leader here is not Sofia, but… Veliko Tarnovo, with 75.5 students per 1000 people. Montana, Pazardzhik, Targovishte are without any students, although in recent years the system of higher education has expanded enormously. Others, such as Razgrad and Silistra, manage to achieve about two or three students per 1,000 population, mostly thanks to small university affiliates.
In demography, things are notorious – Vidin has the most unfavorable indicators. The coefficient of natural growth is extremely low – minus 21.3‰ – more than twice below the average level for the country (-9.7‰). The other areas at the bottom are Smolyan and Silistra. We know that high salaries in Sofia attract thousands of people, but in fact the leader in this indicator is far from the capital – Kardzhali region. There, the mechanical increase was 21.6‰ compared to 7.9 for the capital.
Gabrovo perhaps has the most unexpected leadership position – it is ahead of the capital and is already the district with the most absorbed European funds per capita. Here, each resident receives BGN 4,333 according to the EU, while Sofia, where one of the most expensive projects with European funding is implemented – the metro, amounts to BGN 4,264. Blagoevgrad is surprisingly in the top three with BGN 4,063 per person. Pazardzhik is in first place in RES – 5.51 kW per person of the population (at 0.85 kW per person in the country).
The data on cultural life in the country are also interesting. Silistra – otherwise the district with the lowest GDP per capita in our country, is in first place in terms of visits to libraries, and with many tours ahead of the others. In Silistra, there are 4,055 library visits per 1,000 people, compared to 1,059 for Sofia, 1,115 for student leader Veliko Tarnovo, 1,307 for Shumen and 207 for Pernik, 211 for Haskovo, 194 for Lovech, etc. At the other extreme is Montana – there hasn’t been a single library big enough to be included in the NSI statistics for almost 8 years. There are also zero visits to libraries in the Sofia region.
The most intensive museum tourism is in Gabrovo – 3,340 visits to museums per 1,000 people, and Sofia is very far from the leaders – although the main treasury of art, archeology and history is in the capital, here museum visits are 490 per 1,000 people population (expected for the largest city in the country). After Gabrovo in terms of museum visits comes Veliko Tarnovo (3340 per 1000).
Against the background of our depopulated villages, it is hard to believe that there is an area where less than half of the population lives in cities, but in our country there are even three of them – Kardzhali (41.8%), Silistra (44.8%) and Razgrad (47.8%).
The fact that we do not deal with garbage collection in a modern way can be seen with the naked eye, but some areas lag drastically behind the others. An example is Razgrad – one of the areas with a very high volume of generated waste. The household waste generated is 481 kg per person per year (at 445 kg per person in the country), of which only 10% is sent for treatment and recycling (at 74% in the country). There is also a surprise here – Pernik generates relatively more waste than Sofia compared to the population – 531 kg per person for 2021 (this is the latest data), but it sends almost everything for treatment and recycling (99.9%).
In forests, the leading place is occupied by Smolyan with an incredible 70.60%. More than half of the territory of the district is covered with trees and in Pazardjik (54.3%), Kardzhali (54.2%), Blagoevgrad (51.5%), In comparison, there are not many forests left in Ludogorie – Razgrad has only 22.4%.
