Havana Cuba. – Under the direction of Felipe Gálvez, the film “The Colonists” was selected for the opening of the 44 Festival of New Latin American Cinema that has filled the screens of the Cuban capital since December 8.

With “The Colonists” Felipe Gálvez makes his debut as a director and is considered a masterpiece of Chilean filmography, already awarded the FIPRESCI prize in Cannes and selected to represent Chile at the Oscars.

The plot immerses itself in an atypical western set in Tierra del Fuego at the end of the 19th century. Your theme? The genocide of the Selk’nam indigenous people, a forgotten story that Gálvez revives with a captivating visual narrative, so powerful that ‘The Colonists’ could be silent and still have an impact.

The plot follows three horsemen, including a mestizo, Segundo, and a British lieutenant, on a sinister mission under the orders of a landowner. The cinematography, by Simone D’Arcangelo, is simply sublime, evoking places more typical of Iceland than South America.

Gálvez, without being pedantic, tells us an essential story, not only for its plot but for its critical look at how national stories are constructed. “The Colonists” is not just cinema, it is a history lesson that we should all learn.
