The filmmaker Iván Guarnizo launched ‘On the other side’, a production under your direction, in which he related the story of the kidnapping that his mother suffered at the hands of a commando of the extinct FARC guerrilla in 2004.
After almost two years in captivity, Guarnizo’s mother returned to freedom and with her brought a meticulous diary of her confinement, which allowed the filmmaker to understand her mother’s experiences, and at the same time discover the maternal relationship she had established with one of his captors, nicknamed ‘Güerima’, whom he decided to look for to reconstruct history.
Is journalistic chronicle tells the story of the capture without a precise timeline, so the viewer will have to establish the dates and times of the events.
“It is not a neutral film, but a very political one, take sides for reconciliation, now that many people are scandalized by this sentiment,” Guarnizo said.
The audiovisual piece, which participated in the 2021 Malaga Film Festival, was also premiered at the Hot Docs International Documentary Festival on June 5, showing how Guarnizo entered the minds of his mother’s kidnappers.
