The College of Emeritus Professors met on March 26, 2024.
The primary goal of the March meeting of the College of Emeritus Professors (EPK) was to inform the emeritus professors about the current state of Semmelweis University’s investments. Reconstruction, renovation and new investment works are currently underway at more than 100 locations. Chief technical director István Mészáros gave a detailed description of the developments completed in 2023 and to be implemented in the coming years (2024-2027), which affect all faculties and will mean the expansion and modernization of the university’s educational and medical tasks. In the field of energy developments, financial resources mainly come from EU sources, where possible solar panels were installed on the roofs, and the roofs were modernized and insulated.
In the second half of the meeting, Dr. Anna Tompa, the president of EPK, gave a pictorial account of the devastation in Ukraine, which can be measured not only in human lives, but also in the stock of buildings, factories, mines, and power plants, which caused the collapse of the entire infrastructure. The president also presented the additional natural destruction: the air, water and soil are polluted, which threatens the world’s food supply and accelerates climate change. This is already having an impact all over the world, causing considerable damage to the ecosystems of the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea. Therefore, the war should be ended as soon as possible in order to prevent the further deterioration of the natural damage and to start the restoration of the infrastructure, he underlined.
