The autoDNA website, providing information services on the history of used vehicles, presented data that illustrate the situation on the Polish second-hand car market in 2022. And this is not optimistic, because when it comes to the scale of re-registrations to a new owner and first import passenger car registrations last year saw a double-digit decline.
The collapse caused by the war in Ukraine and problems with the availability of components
Of course, this unfavorable picture was affected by both the limitations in the availability of components necessary for the production of cars and the uncertainty related to the war in Ukraine, which meant that many customers put their plans related to the replacement or purchase of a used car on the back burner.
Re-registration of domestic used cars for a new owner – 2022
This can be seen from dry data. Throughout 2022, the number of domestic re-registrations of used cars fell to 640,000. vehicles. This represents a decrease of 29%. compared to 2021. It looks even worse in the case of registration of imported cars, because here we can already talk about a real breakdown. In 2022, Poles imported 963,000 vehicles, i.e. by as much as 39 percent. less than in 2021

Cars are getting more expensive, including second-hand ones
This significant decline in second-hand cars is the result of the lower availability of new cars. By having to wait longer to pick up the vehicle at the dealership, owners are less likely to dispose of their existing vehicles. And this directly translates into a slowdown in the replacement of used cars on Western European markets.
Re-registration of vehicles of domestic origin and imports – 2022
The increase in prices of new cars also contributed to the increase, of course also a consequence of problems with the availability of components for the production of new cars. As a result, some people began to think less willingly about replacing their vehicles with new ones, and this limited the supply of used copies and pushed their prices to unprecedented levels.
Considering the Polish market alone, five voivodships had the largest share in the used car market – Dolnośląskie, Mazowieckie, Małopolskie, Śląskie and Wielkopolskie – which accounted for almost 60 percent. of all re-registrations of used cars of domestic origin and 51 percent. for imported cars.
