LIVE Techno – Earth can get very cold. From the South Pole to the Arctic Circle, extreme cold temperatures can plummet to bone-chilling levels. But what was the coldest temperature ever recorded? And what is the coldest city or the coldest permanently inhabited part of Earth?
In general, the average temperature of this human planet varies, from minus 13 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 25 degrees Celsius) to 113 F (45 C). For comparison, daytime temperatures on Mercury soar to 800 F (430 C) while at night, they drop to minus 290 F (minus 180 C).
The coldest place on Earth is on the East Antarctic Plateau, Antarctica with a temperature of minus 144 F (minus 98 C), according to the Live Science website, Sunday, May 21, 2023.
The researchers found this by re-examining satellite data taken from a ridge on the Antarctic ice sheet that previously reached minus 135 F (minus 93 C). Their new analysis, published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, shows the actual temperature is even lower.
They found that the factors driving these chilly temperatures were sunny conditions and very dry air —moisture can trap heat in the air. Both of these conditions must persist for several days for the temperature to drop to minus 144 Fahrenheit.
Ted Scambos, a senior research scientist at the National Snow and Ice Data Center at the University of Colorado-Boulder, who led the study, said in a statement that this appears to be the limit to how cold the Earth’s surface can get.
