The cold will beat the heat of the marathon

Doha: 8,000 runners braved the cold to compete in the Doha Marathon held at the Corniche. Ureedoo Chief Executive Officer Sheikh Ali Bin Jaber Al Thani kicked off the marathon which started from the Parade Pavilion.

Local and international athletes were also there to cheer. In the 5-hour long marathon held yesterday morning, people from children to women and men participated in various categories of 1 km, 5, 10, 21 and 42 km. The marathon concluded by going back to Corniche via Corniche, Katara and Lucail.

The full marathon of 42 km was the first start. Ended with 1km for kids. A total of 10 lakh Riyal prizes were given in various categories. Medals were also awarded to those who successfully completed the marathon in all categories.

A Volkswagen T-Roc car was also given as a prize through a raffle draw. The Doha Marathon was organized by Ureedu, a public sector telecom company in collaboration with the Qatar Athletics Federation.

Mohsin Outalha of Morocco finished first in the men’s category in the full marathon. It was run in 2 hours 6 minutes 49 seconds. In the women’s category, Ethiopia’s Meserath Belete finished first in 2 hours 20 minutes 45 seconds. Britain’s Michael Kallenberger (2 hours 23 minutes 2 seconds) in the men’s category and Abigail Kember of the USA in the women’s category won the first place in 3 hours 4 minutes. Morocco’s Anour El Khouz (1 hour 3 minutes 23 seconds) and Tetiana Pidoina of Ukraine (1 hour 8 minutes 53 seconds) won the first place in the men’s half marathon.
