Passed by the training center of Montpellier, AS Lattes and Le Puy, Sofyane Abdeldjelil is today one of the great hopes of AS Béziers in National 2. For Foot-National, the player of soon to be 19 years old looks back on his career and his ambitions. Interview.
Sofyane, can you tell us about your journey to start?
I started in pre-training at Montpellier Hérault. I then went to a small club near Montpellier called AS Lattes, then I left very far from Montpellier, to Puy-en-Velay, before ending up at AS Béziers.
Today, you oscillate between the group N2 and the U19?
That’s it ! I did my whole first part of the year with the U19 Nationals. And as the championship has stopped, the coach of the N2 Didier Santini made the young people benefit from going up with the N2 group. I was one of those young people. He gave me my chance, trusted me and I gave him back.
How do you live this season truncated by the health context?
It’s frankly disappointing because I had a very good start to the season and it stopped me in my tracks. Suddenly, I couldn’t really express myself well and it’s a shame.
Do you think it’s a wasted year?
Yes, this is a wasted year. Knowing that I am in 19 years second year… The clubs are already not very interested in the category so if there is no championship, it will be complicated.
How did you react to the decision of the French Football Federation (FFF) to suspend the N2 championship?
I think it’s good for me because if the coach gives me a chance and since I don’t have more matches with the U19 Nationals, I could well go up with the N2 group.
What is your experience with the N2 group?
I did some training and a friendly match against Montpellier Hérault. I had made a good entry into the game, I played for fifteen minutes. I did the right thing, I did not lose the balls I had to negotiate.
You are able to play a defensive midfielder as a runner but also a right back. What’s your favorite job?
My favorite position is now that of right-back but I played the rest of my career as number 6.
How do you explain this versatility?
I think it’s thanks to my volume of play. As number 6 you run a lot, but sideways too. But I like it more laterally because I can provide more offensively.
How did this transition from middle to side come about?
The coach once told me that he would see me as a full-back and tried me at this position during training. I hadn’t been disappointing.
Were you rather happy or skeptical?
At first I was skeptical. When I played against Colomiers with the U19s, there was a very good striker opposite, who played on the left side. The coach had asked me to mark him in the pants, not to let go. So I got on it and was the man of the match because I stopped him from advancing. Because if he stepped forward, it was over for us.
Do you see the rest of your career in this position?
I’ll tell you yes and no, because I can still play number 6 but I’m versatile, I can play all positions.
Versatility, is it your main strength?
Yes that’s it.
What about your other qualities?
My playing volume and my ball technique.
What are your short and long term ambitions?
In the short term, it is to integrate the group of the N2 and in the long term, to sign one day in Ligue 1.
Do you think you can get there quickly?
Pretty quickly I don’t know if I can say this but I know I’m a hard worker and I wouldn’t let go.
