Lausanne. The draw for the new FIFA Club World Cup, which increases from seven to 32 teams and will be held for the first time in the United States, will take place on December 5 in Miami, FIFA announced this Monday.
The date was as anticipated as many other answers to questions that remain in the air regarding this competition, whose financial distribution with the clubs remains a mystery: the television broadcasters are still unknown and at the moment only one sponsor is known, the Chinese group Hisense.
Scheduled for December 5, the draw will determine the eight groups of four teams that will compete in the first phase of the tournament.
The 16 clubs that place in the first two positions of each group will advance to the direct elimination phase, from the round of 16 to the final, without a match for third place.
All those qualified for this tournament, which will be held every four years and whose first edition will take place from June 15 to July 13, 2025 in twelve American stadiums, will already be known on the day of the draw.
The winner of the Copa Libertadores remains to be determined, whose 100% Brazilian final will face Atlético Mineiro and Botafogo on November 30 in Buenos Aires.
Desired since the end of 2016 by FIFA boss Gianni Infantino, the new competition has accumulated numerous criticisms, in the midst of an overloaded calendar.
The players’ union FIFPro and the World Leagues Association announced at the end of July their intention to go to the European Commission against FIFA.
