“You have to admit that we are moving day by day because all of this is not in our hands,” the club’s former goalkeeper told Sky Sports before the game against Newcastle.
Chelsea are seeking an easing of the conditions set by the British government on Thursday to continue their activity. The club no longer has the right to sell new tickets or merchandising items and all revenues related to broadcast rights or competition bonuses are frozen. “Discussions are continuing so that we can operate in a way that allows us to finish the season,” Cech said.
The salvation of the club could come from a sale initiated even before the announcement of sanctions against Abramovich for his supposed links with Russian President Vladimir Putin who ordered the invasion of Ukraine.
But, despite the number of potential buyers who have come forward, the procedure will take several more weeks and the British government will be very vigilant that the oligarch, who bought the club in 2003 to bring it to the top of English football and Europe with hundreds of millions of euros invested, derives no profit from it.
Currently third in the Premier League, Chelsea is also still in contention in the Champions League, of which it is the defending champion. He must face Lille in the round of 16 second leg on Wednesday with a two-goal advantage in the first leg (2-0).
