The Closure of Znojmia Pickles: Traditional Delicacy Disappearing Forever

People are used to finding things in stores that they have been buying for years, even decades. After all, such a supermarket is a certain reminder of traditions, because here you can be sure that you will find things that you like and that form a daily part of your lives. But now imagine that you will lose some such food. Surely that would make you very sorry, wouldn’t it?

There will be a closure

Unfortunately, this will soon happen in the case of one traditional delicacy. You will never buy it again in the form and quality you have been used to for decades. Unfortunately, this is the result of the machinations of international food producers, who have completely privatized the Czech food industry in recent years, which is now having its unfortunate results.

The food giant Orkla has announced that it is permanently stopping the production of the popular Znojmia pickles in the Czech Republic. And not only that. It will even close two factories where these pickles were produced. One is located in Bzenec in Hodonínsk and the other near Prague in Panenské Břežany. The company does not even try to pretend that it has other uses for the plants, or that it is trying to secure the future of its Czech employees.

Right now, there is a slowdown in the Znojmia production facilities, which will lead to a definitive halt in production and the closing of the factories at the end of this year. More than 250 employees will take it hard as they will be laid off. They will certainly receive some statutory severance pay, but many of them have worked for the company for decades. And now they find themselves on the pavement.

It will never come back

Orkla is counting on the fact that it will keep the Znojmia brand and will continue to sell cucumbers under it in Czech stores, but in this case it will essentially be a completely different product. It will be supplied from somewhere abroad without any tradition or ties to the Czech Republic.

It is worrying that this international company also owns other Czech food companies that still produce here. These are, for example, Májka or Hamé pasties, Vitana flavorings or Otma ketchup. After this experience, it can no longer be ruled out that the company will also close these plants and keep only the valuable, but already emptied, brands.

It turns out that selling this family silver in the form of traditional companies producing Czech food was not a good decision at all. For managers of foreign concerns, it is nothing more than numbers in tables. And if they stop being published, for example, for a year, it can mean the immediate liquidation of production, which will simply never come back.
