The Closure of Milan Knížák’s Gallery in Prague

The PrahaIN.cz server was contacted by an elderly German couple who are opening a clothing boutique in the center of the metropolis, in Karlová Street. Whenever something interests him, he sends photos and his feelings. The last time he did so was after seeing Milan Knížák’s gallery in Dlouhá Street.

According to their own words, the couple was excited by everything they saw through the window. The only thing they didn’t understand was the invitation to the year-old exhibition. Both Germans emigrated, they still speak Czech very well.

Otherwise, they literally melted over individual objects.

We first tried to find out how the gallery works with the operator Miroslav Říháček. However, he did not respond to e-mail questions. Only the website specified that the gallery is in operation. It is open in the center of Prague every weekday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

A German couple confirmed to us by phone that they really like Knížák’s work. “It’s different from what we know from classic art galleries, it’s emotional, it evokes strong moods, we haven’t seen a similar gallery in the center of your capital city.”

It’s over!

It will be recalled on the spot that Knížák’s work is also widely represented in Germany. Let’s name the Museum Sprengel in Hannover, Kunsthalle Hamburg, Berlin’s Museum Checkpoint Charlie or the Stadtgalerie in Stuttgart.

By the way, the former rector of the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague exhibited in 1970.

We also went to the place. It certainly didn’t work well for us. A chipped, painted wall, dirty glass, inhospitable surroundings. The overall atmosphere was rather depressing.

Finally, our editors turned to Milan Knížák himself. And he surprisingly told us that the spaces are running out.

The interview was conducted on Tuesday 3.10.

PrahaIN.cz: Mr. Knížak, we would like to ask how satisfied you are with the operation of your gallery.

Milan Knížak: Ending.

PrahaIN.cz: Oh yeah. And when does it end?

Milan Knížak: This month.

PrahaIN.cz: And can you tell for what reason it ends?

Milan Knížak: It’s been going on for a long time.

PrahaIN.cz: We noticed that there is a poster for the 2022 exhibition on the site, and the operator doesn’t really care about the house. You didn’t mind?

Milan Knížak: No. All right.

PrahaIN.cz: And how long were you there?

Milan Knížak: Ten years.

PrahaIN.cz: And how many customers went there?

Milan Knížak: I don’t know. I didn’t care about that.

PrahaIN.cz: And will you have another gallery in Prague?

Milan Knížak: I hope not.

The artist further told us that his fresh paintings from July and August of this year are still on display in the gallery. He also added that he mainly paints in the summer.
