The cleanest and dirtiest beaches in Latvia have been identified; overall, the amount of waste on the coast is increasing

21 waste units per 100 meters of beach have been found on Abragciems beach. 31 waste units were found on the beach of Engure center.

The third cleanest beach is Akmeņrags beach in Pāvilosta region, followed by Mērsrags beach, Miķeļtorns beach, Rītabuļļi, Ziemupe, Bernāti, Lauči akmens, Mazirbe and Pūrciems beaches.

On all these beaches, the amount of waste per 100 meters of beach is less than 100 waste units.

The top of the dirty beaches this year is Kolka, with 1461 waste units per 100 meters of beach. As the organizers of the campaign explained, this amount of waste is not related to the municipality’s mistakes in the management of the beach, but to the waste that has been dumped from the sea. 80% of the waste found on the beach was pieces of coal.

It is not clear to the participants whether this is related to historical pollution or whether it is recent pollution.

The second dirtiest beach is Daugavgriva beach. Here, too, the amount of pollution is not related to the actions of the residents of Bolderāja and it is not waste generated on site.

The third dirty beach is Vecāķi, followed by Lielupe, Apšuciems, Pāvilosta, Staldzene, Zvejniekciems, Gauja estuary, Klapkalnciems, Saulkrasti, Ovīši, Liepāja Southwestern beach, Latvian and Lithuanian border beach, Veczemju klinetis, Roja, Tūja and Tūja.

On all these beaches, the amount of waste exceeds 200 waste units per 100 beach meters.

According to the organizers of the campaign, the situation continues to deteriorate on the beaches of Jurmala and the central beach of Roja.

In general, the amount of waste on the Latvian coast is increasing, according to the Environmental Education Fund and the “My Sea” campaign polluting waste monitoring data.

This year, an average of 254 waste units have been detected in 100 coastal meters, which is a new anti-record.

So far, the largest amount of waste – 248 waste units – was discovered during the 2018 campaign. In the first year of the campaign, 180 waste units per 100 meters of beach were found.

Various unidentified pieces of plastic cause the greatest amount of pollution. Also this year, various pieces of plastic accounted for 19% of all waste.

This year, the amount of coal waste on the beaches has significantly increased. Together with other wastes that do not belong to other waste groups, they accounted for 16% of the total amount of waste.

In third place are plastic bags, followed by paper, as well as cigarettes, cigarettes and cigarette filters.

Cigarette components were significantly supplemented this year by one of the new types of waste – cigarette filters for tobacco heating equipment.

This year, Covid-19 pandemic-related waste, such as face masks, has also appeared on the coast.

It has already been reported that the “My Sea” green expedition took place for the ninth time this year, in accordance with the methodology of the UN Environment Program, surveying the entire Latvian coast and carrying out an assessment of marine polluting waste in 42 coastal locations.
