The city prepares for the United Nations Assembly

The United Nations General Assembly, the largest diplomatic meeting in the world, begins next week, amid the war between Ukraine and Russia and tense international relations.

NYPD Patrol Chief Kenneth Corey says:

“The flow of threats and the environment doesn’t just change from year to year, or from hour to hour, it really changes by the minute, in real time, and we need to adapt to these changes as conditions change. At the United Nations (UN) headquarters, located on First Avenue in a space from 42nd to 48th Street, 140 presidents and prime ministers will present themselves, a meeting with more international leaders than last year.

President Biden is expected to arrive on Tuesday.

“More diplomats to protect, more staff needed, more outages, more trailers on the move than last year and the year before,” adds Corey.

In 2020 the session was virtual due to the pandemic, they returned in 2021 and this year is already the closest to normal.

Kim Royster, the chief of transportation of the city police department, stressed that all of these leaders carry a wide range of security services with them to ensure their protection as they move around the city.

And with this they anticipate traffic delays and the closure of the next avenues and roads.

First Avenue from 42nd to 48th Streets

44th Street from first to second street.

45th Street from first to second street.

46th Street from first to second street.

And 42nd Street from FDR Drive to Second Avenue, among others.

Authorities urge New Yorkers to use public transportation to get around.

Regarding the protests, the head of the police patrol said they will happen every day and that this will not change during the General Assembly.

He added that NYPD officers are trained to monitor protests and make sure they remain peaceful, but of course further road closures can occur if needed.
