The city opens a resource center to help asylum seekers

As thousands of immigrants continue to pour into the city, the city government has opened a resource center in Hell’s Kitchen where they can find help navigating the legal and educational systems New York has to offer.

An estimated 11,000 asylum seekers have arrived in the city in recent months, most of which were transported by bus from Texas by Texas Governor Greg Abbott.

The mayor’s office says the city’s reception system is at a breaking point, prompting officials to consider re-evaluating current homeless policies.

By law, the city is required to provide shelter for homeless people, in this case also for recently arrived immigrants.

Mayor Eric Adams spread a message on social media about the opening of the resource center.

“Today we are announcing a one-stop shop for asylum seekers to receive free and confidential help to access important services and resources that will help them integrate and thrive in New York,” said the mayor.

Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine also posted a message on social media about the new center.

“This morning New York opened a resource navigation center for asylum seekers arriving here on buses sent from Texas. It offers medical assistance, school registration, legal assistance, clothing and much more.

“We are the only place in the United States that does this. That’s how you respond with compassion,” Levin said in his message.
