The average number of children per woman in Spain in 2018 was 1.26, according to the ‘Urban Indicators 2021’ statistic published this Wednesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE). One of the indicators analyzed refers to the average number of children per woman.

By cities, those with the highest average number of children per woman were Melilla (2.17), Lorca (1.66) and Ceuta (1.64), followed by Línea de la Concepción (1.62), Manresa (1 .55), Almería (1.52), Cartagena (1.52), Parla (1.52), Sanlúcar de Barrameda (1.50), Reus (1.48), Murcia (1.45), Santa Coloma de Gramenet (1.45), Rivas-Vaciamadrid (1.44), Getafe (1.43) and Terrassa (1.43).

On the contrary, the lowest averages occurred in the Canary Islands, specifically in San Cristóbal de la Laguna (0.89 children per woman), Telde (0.95) and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (0.96). Reference is also made to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (0.96), Gijón (0.97), Santa Cruz de Tenerife (0.97), Avilés (1.02), Cádiz (1.02), Oviedo (1 .02), Ourense (1.03), Cerdanyola del Vallès (1.04), Ferrol (1.05), Fuengirola (1.06), Torrelavega (1.06), Vigo (1.06) and A Coruña (1.07).

The INE defines it as the average number of children that a woman residing in a municipality would have throughout her fertile life if she maintained the same fertile intensity by age as that observed in a specific year in that municipality.

Another indicator refers to life expectancy at birth. This indicator, which represents the average number of years that a person is expected to live from the moment of birth, has been calculated as an average of three years, with 2018 being the central reference year.

Five municipalities exceeded 85 years, all of them from Madrid: Pozuelo de Alarcón, Majadahonda, Alcorcón, Las Rozas de Madrid and Alcobendas. At the opposite extreme, La Línea de la Concepción was the only one of the 126 cities studied with a life expectancy at birth of less than 80 years. Ceuta (80.0), Melilla (80.5), Cádiz (81.0) and Arrecife (81.0) also appear in the tail.

Other indicators related to the average annual net income per inhabitant have also been released, considering the 416 municipalities with more than 20,000 inhabitants, which reveals that the three cities with the highest income per inhabitant in 2018 were Pozuelo de Alarcón (Madrid), with 28,326 euros, Boadilla del Monte (Madrid), with 21,795, and Sant Cugat del Vallès (Barcelona), with 20,582 euros, compared to Níjar (Almería), with 7,307 euros, Vícar (Almería), with 7,451 euros, and Los Palacios and Villafranca (Seville), with 7,507 euros, the cities with the lowest income per inhabitant.

In addition, according to Statistics data, Pozuelo (Madrid) is the municipality in Spain with the lowest estimated average unemployment rate in 2020, with 6.5%, followed by Donostia/San Sebastián (7.1%) and Sant Cugat del Valles (7.4%). On the contrary, Linares (Jaén), with 32.5%, followed by Córdoba (with 27.8%) and Granada (26.8%) presented the highest unemployment rates.

Regarding the neighborhoods, those with the highest average annual net income per inhabitant with data from 2018 were El Viso (44,825 euros), Recoletos (43,567 euros) and Piovera (40,510 euros), all three from Madrid. Meanwhile, the lowest rents were located in Seville –zones 5-A (Polígono Sur neighborhood in the South district), 4-E (Los Pajaritos and Amate neighborhoods in the Cerro-Amate district) and 9-A (partially occupied by the Colores/Entreparques neighborhood)– and zone 4-A of Alicante/Alacant (which mostly includes the Juan XXIII neighborhood).
