Today, the poster for the Banco Fijo Winter Rowing Regatta “Ciudad de Málaga” organized by the Malaga City Council, through the Sports Area, has been presented, and which has the technical advice of the Association Sports Malaga Dragón Boats BCS and the collaboration of Royal Mediterranean Club. The general director of the Sports Area of the Malaga City Council was present at this event, Juan Ruiz, and representatives of the Málaga Dragón Boats Sports Association and the Real Club Mediterráneo.

The regatta will take place next Sunday, December 20, at 12:00 in the Marina of the Real Club Mediterráneo. Its most important aspect is that it is a test in which its participants are women from Malaga who have suffered, or suffer from, breast cancer and its objectives, in addition to the purely sports, make visible, promote and facilitate the practice of Dragon Boat, Nautical sport of Asian origin with more than 2,000 years old.

This is a specialty where camaraderie, teamwork and synchronization go hand in hand; Furthermore, it is characterized by its festive character during regattas and festivals, which has made it a very popular sport for paddlers of all ages. It is a sport that does not require prior knowledge and unlike other similar sports, it is not a problem for athletes of any physical condition or age.

What is BCS: Breast Cancer Survivor

In 1996, Dr. Donald C. Mckenzie from the University of British Columbia carried out a project in which he demonstrated the importance of physical exercise in recovering the upper torso in women who had suffered from breast cancer. It was found that the psychological improvement of these groups of women, united by the same life experience, was remarkable. The feeling of being part of a team and joining forces for a common goal meant an improvement for the women who were part of the first crews. They understood that teamwork helped them deal with the problems derived from the disease in a different way.

Abreast in a Boat (all in the same boat) is made up of women of all ages who have overcome breast cancer. The benefits of this practice generated 25 years ago that the BCS movement began its journey in the sport of Dragon Boat. Following the formation of the first BCS crews, the movement began to grow exponentially around the world, with the creation of the International Commission for Paddlers with Breast Cancer. The movement had a worldwide impact and, currently, it is made up of more than 400 teams and 9000 paddlers who have suffered from breast cancer distributed around the world.

The Malaga Dragon Boat team, technical advisers of the regatta, is a pioneer in Andalusia in this activity and one of the first to arrive in Spain. It was created in 2018 by the initiative of the oncologist Julia Ruiz Vozmediano who, after passing through the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center Hospital in New York, decided to start it in Malaga after verifying the benefits that this sport could bring to her cancer patients .
