The town of Lamentin is one of the ten winners of the call for projects for the resilience of coral reefs and associated ecosystems launched by the French Biodiversity Office.
The city of Lamentin has been selected by the OFB for its project “Reduction of inputs of anthropogenic fresh water from an industrial area and restoration of mangroves located downstream (We save faster)”.
This GPA is part of a desire to significantly reduce the impact of human activities on coral reefs, seagrass beds and mangroves, but also to promote the resilience of coral reefs to help slow their decline.
Supported by the ministries of ecological transition and territorial cohesion (MTECT) and internal and overseas territories, it is part of the national plan for the protection of coral reefs implemented by the state, whose protection objective has been extended to all coral reefs French by 2025.
10 projects distributed across all overseas territories were selected:
-
6 interventions to reduce the direct or indirect impacts on these ecosystems : reduction of pressures, establishment of strong protection zones;
-
4 interventions to reduce the impact of extreme events and accelerate the recovery of ecosystems after these events, in order to avoid subsequent losses which lead to the reduction of their conservation status over time.
The winners will benefit from the technical expertise of the OFB for the construction and execution of their project.
