An eyesore in Dortmund could be bought by the city. There’s a real gem lurking in there. A happy ending for the drug mile?

Dortmund – The city of Dortmund may be taking over the large building complex on Ostenhellweg. The city is about to take over the building. She wants to revive the gem at the heart of the passage.

For years, the city of Dortmund had tried to take over the eyesore in Dortmund’s city center. What was once a popular excursion and shopping destination for many Dortmund residents has been languishing for years. Business people and residents of the passage also complain about the increasing littering caused by homeless people and drug addicts (more Dortmund news at RUHR24).

The city has now achieved a breakthrough in the takeover and has been able to negotiate with the owner. As the city treasurer and head of the real estate department Jörg Stüdemann told the Ruhr News confirmed, “an outcome had been negotiated”. However, there is no information about the purchase price.

A gem from 1956 in downtown Dortmund is to be revived

In the heart of the passage there is a real gem that will be familiar to many Dortmunders. The old “Universum Filmtheater” was designed by the architect August Wittmann and opened in 1956. The post-war cinema had space for 650 guests and finally closed in 2000. Since then it has been rotting away.

The listed building has certainly seen better days. Residents are increasingly complaining that the entrance from Rosental Street is littered with rubbish in the morning. The city wants to work on that.

That’s why the cinema and the arcade should be revived and made usable for other purposes. However, there is still no detailed concept. This prevents the closure of traditional shops in Dortmund.

Dortmund wants to present a usage concept for the passage with a cinema

There should initially be no changes for tenants of the passage. What happens next in the long term will be decided at the latest when a usage concept is presented. If the council agrees to the purchase, a feasibility study will be commissioned to implement it.

Only then can a decision be made about what will happen to the property. The building structure and statics must also be checked by experts. This protects the historic building in Dortmund from decay.

The city council is expected to decide on the administration’s proposed resolution at the next meeting on December 14th. In the best case scenario, the purchase contract with the owner could then be signed at the beginning of 2024.
