Charlotte. – The City of Charlotte announced Friday, October 8, that beginning Monday, November 1, the Government Center in Uptown will reopen to the public during regular business hours.
Local authorities had decided to close the building on Thursday, August 19, in reaction to the increase in coronavirus cases in Charlotte and Mecklenburg County.
Face meetings
The new regulation indicates that, from Monday, October 18, the public will be able to attend in person the meetings of the Charlotte City Council, the Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners, the CMS Board of Education.
Between Monday, October 18 and Sunday, October 31, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center will only be open to the public for local Council meetings, such as strategy sessions and zoning meetings.
It will also be open for public meetings of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Commissioners and Board of Education.
During the days of these sessions, the building will open 30 minutes before the meetings and close 15 minutes after the conclusion of the meetings.
Masks
During the face-to-face meetings, the mandate of mandatory use of the mask on the premises of the government building, determined on August 18, will be maintained.
This in-person attendance policy is subject to change if there are new federal guidelines from the Atlanta Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the state North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NC-DHHS), or if there are orders executives of the governor, Roy Cooper, who increase public health restrictions.
In July, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) had advised that people, regardless of vaccination status, should return to wearing masks indoors, at high risk of COVID-19 transmission.
The government building’s August closure coincided with the Charlotte City Territory mandatory mask mandate, which went into effect Wednesday, August 18, and was extended to all Mecklenburg County gated public places. , on the 20th of that month.
Background
The Government Center was initially closed in March 2020 when state and local measures to restrict meetings due to the pandemic began.
In June 2021, the City Council’s face-to-face sessions were reopened and in July the Government Center experienced its total reactivation.
But then the recent total closure was ordered in August and now its new reopening process is launched.

All City Council meetings and committee meetings will continue to be broadcast live on the city’s Facebook and YouTube pages, the GOV Channel on television, and the GOV Channel page.
Members of the public and the media who wish to attend these meetings in person may park for free in the government building parking lot at 232 S. Davidson Street.
Attendees must enter the parking lot through the Davidson Street entrance.
