The city of Bern begins to widen the Aareuferweg

On Monday, January 9, 2023, the city of Bern will start construction work to widen the path along the banks of the Aare between the Dählholzli zoo and the Elfenau.

The coastal path, which is very popular, will be widened by two to three metres. The construction works are expected to last until the end of March 2023.

A detour for pedestrians has been reported, as announced on Thursday 5 January 2023 by the municipal directorate of civil engineering, traffic and urban greenery.

Several trees have to be cut down for the expansion. They will be replaced by new lifts in the Löchligut.

Bern and Köniz are pursuing their own projects

For several weeks, the canton has been rehabilitating the banks of the Aare between Eichholz and Dählholzli.

Some of the banking structures have been swept away or destroyed, so that the protection of the banks can no longer be guaranteed.

Parallel to the cantonal renovation project, the city of Bern and the municipality of Köniz are continuing their own projects. In the case of the city of Bern, it is precisely the widening of the route along the river.

The municipality of Köniz wants to improve the situation for pedestrians and cyclists on the riverside path in the area of the Eichholz information center.
