The city of Bekasi distributes 16,560 condoms as part of the prevention of HIV transmission

Bekasi (ANTARA) – The government of the city of Bekasi, West Java, has distributed 16,560 condoms in an attempt to prevent the transmission of viruses that damage the immune system by infecting and destroying CD4 cells or the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

“The use of contraceptives can reduce the risk of HIV transmission by up to 95 percent,” said Bekasi city health bureau chief Tanti Rohilawati in Bekasi on Friday.

Condoms are provided to health facilities that have HIV treatment assistance services, including Cashbullah Abdul Madjid Hospital, Elisabeth Hospital and Ananda Hospital Bekasi.

Then Puskesmas Perumnas II, Puskesmas Mustika Jaya, Puskesmas Karang Kitri, Puskesmas Pengasinan, Puskesmas Kali Abang Tengah, as well as. Jati Sampurna Health Center.

“This contraceptive device will then be distributed to HIV discordant couples as a prevention and at the same time break the chain of transmission to partners,” he said.

Tanti explained that discordant couples are couples, one of which is a person with HIV or ODHIV. When they are in good condition they can have sexual intercourse during the fertile period.

He admitted that HIV transmission could still occur even after using condoms. Causes include errors while using the device, leaks in the device, and improper storage of condoms, such as exposure to direct sunlight or placing them in a wallet.

“It is also necessary to pay attention to the expiration period of condoms because it is usually the cause of the leaks,” he said.

The Bekasi City Health Office has also taken a number of measures to prevent HIV transmission in addition to the use of condoms, including speeding up coordination and reporting cases to all puskesmas and hospital teams.

“We also conduct HIV-related screening and education every Sunday during Car Free Day. This education involves HIV activists or activists,” he said.

His party noted that there were 554 HIV cases in January-August 2022.
