The high concentrations of PFAS in the blood of ten residents near the 3M factory in Zwijndrecht also worry the city council of Antwerp. Alderman of Health Els van Doesburg (N-VA) insists that all residents of Antwerp who live within a radius of three kilometers from the factory can have their blood tested for PFAS concentrations.

“Now pointing out the ‘no regret’ measures (Do not eat or eat fewer vegetables, fruit and eggs from your own garden within a radius of 10 kilometers around the 3M factory, ed.) is digging the well when the calf has drowned,” says Els van Doesburg, who refers to the response of the cabinet of Flemish Minister of Health Wouter Beke (CD&V). He has said that “the precautions remain in force” and that she cannot make any further statements because they have only heard of the investigation through the media.

“People will only be able to be reassured by a blood test and medical follow-up”, continues ships van Doesburg. “We therefore repeat our urgent request from in June to have anyone who wishes to test it. That is therefore much broader than the samples that the Agency for Care and Health is currently taking and analyzing from 800 local residents.”
