Vatican City / Naples, October 31, 2020 (KAP) Naples Cardinal Crescenzio Sepe has complained of “total paralysis” in his home metropolis. “We can say that Naples is a city on its knees,” he told the Vatican News portal (Saturday). The most recent restrictive measures in view of the corona pandemic threatened to undo all encouraging developments.
The cardinal spoke of a “desperation” in various economic sectors that should have stopped their activities: “Loans have to be taken out, the number of unemployed is growing, there is a collapse in tourism and consumption.”
The church tries to help the families suffering from the crisis – for example with food parcels. But the “invisible poor” fell through the cracks. The result is “a drama for Neapolitan society”. Because many unemployed, in the words of the archbishop, “fall into the hands of gangsters and criminal organizations”. They tried to “catch” those affected in order to put them in their service.
