Perhaps only the Pontiac Aztek or the Fiat Multipla, which is much more popular in our country, managed to evoke so many emotions before the Citroën C4 Cactus. But thanks to this, prices remain high. Worth it?
The automotive world is definitely not fair. Fiat, for example, knows about this, which years ago presented its vision of an absolutely great family car, and even brought it into series production, only to receive almost nothing but ridicule. And perhaps only because of the higher cabin with a characteristic overflow in front of the dashboard, which reminded many of a fat leg in a ballerina.
Sometimes all it takes is one striking detail and all the effort for originality is in awe. It is Citroën that has a lot of experience with such details over generations and did not hesitate when designing its golf competitor, the C4 Cactus model. Although it saw the light of day for the first time in 2014, most customers saw only distinctive plastic inserts AirBumps on the doors and then some car around it instead of an imaginative golf competitor.
It is worth it
And that is clearly a shame, because the cactus belongs exactly on the border between non-boring hatchbacks and the first crossovers, which, together with the competition, paved the way to today’s black sales figures. Against established competition, the cactus offered a pleasantly high seat and a nice view from the car, a relatively reasonably enclosed space and a fresh interior, the instrument panel of which did not have either a tachometer or any light symbolizing that the engine was still cold. Cactus did not even hide in the details that it is trying to honor the philosophy of the legendary 2CV, i.e. simplicity. With low-loss PureTech engines or reliable turbodiesels, it therefore weighed only 965 to 1070 kg, which is an excellent prerequisite for economical operation.
However, these lofty goals did not appeal much to the Czech customer. The bazaar offer in our region therefore copies its initial domestic popularity, which was not one of the world-shattering ones. However, this does not apply to more western countries, where with a total of 373,289 units sold, it has found its place on the market after all.
What does this mean for bazaar shoppers? There aren’t that many of them, and wonder of the world, unlike the multiply, the value of the surviving cars didn’t fall rapidly to absolute zero. One could rather say that the cactus holds it surprisingly well. There are currently about fifty cars on the market, with a clear predominance of gasoline units and cars from individual citizen advertisements.
The Brazilian market is a completely different story. A European model was imported here for modernization, but that changed in the second half of 2018 and the Brazilians got their own specification. While the European model lost the controversial roof rails, the Brazilian still wore them proudly. Conventional roll-down rear windows were also a significant improvement on the local Cactus produced at the Porto Real plant. All the cars produced in Madrid, Spain only had a cheap, folding solution. And while in Europe the production of the car ended due to the covid-19 pandemic in May 2020 and without a replacement, in Brazil the car enjoys extraordinary popularity to this day.
