Fast Manchester City in the English League Cup must be stopped at the quarter-finals. Citizens were kicked out Southampton after losing 0-2.
Southampton-Manchester City was played at St. Mary’s Stadium, Thursday (12/1/2023) early morning WIB. The visitors first made themselves dangerous in the fifth minute with Ilkay Guendogan’s strike from the edge of the penalty area, but the ball was still wide of goal.
Southampton then created two sip opportunities, which Stefan Ortega was however able to dismiss. There was a header from Mohammed Salisu and a shot from Duje Caleta-Car in the seventh minute.
Man City’s goal finally broke in the 23rd minute. A shot by Sekou Mara fails to stop Ortega and Soton takes the lead 1-0.
Southampton led 2–0 in the 28th minute. Moussa Djenepo’s shot from outside the area slipped into the Manchester City goal.
Man City was completely dead in the first half. Until the break, Pep Guardiola’s team could only make two shots without any of them going on goal.
The Citizens tried to reduce the delay in the second half, but no goals came until the 60th minute of the match. On the other hand, the Sotons are still capable of spreading threats.
Man City created a chance in the 71st minute. Kevin De Bruyne’s cross was headed in front of goal, but Erling Haaland quickly lost to the opposition goalkeeper in welcoming the ball.
Soton scored the third goal in the 76th minute. The goal was disallowed because he knew it was offside.
A minute later it’s Manchester City’s turn to create chances. Guendogan threw a pull bait, but the ball hit by Julian Alvarez was still so weak that the goalkeeper could anticipate it.
Man City have never managed to score a goal. The match ended 2-0 for Southampton to win, who at the same time successfully entered the semi-finals.
