A new Consultation Committee took place this Thursday, January 6, 2022. On the sidelines of this first meeting of the year, Yves Van Laethem was interviewed by Belga. The opportunity for the interfederal spokesperson for the fight against the coronavirus in Belgium to discuss the upsurge in contamination due to the Omicron variant.
“We expect to have potentially a lot more than that again in the coming weeks,” he explains of the infections. Yves Van Laethem adds that “the number of hospital admissions is increasing, but fortunately we have a continuous reduction in intensive care and we have come back under this famous barrier of 500 beds”.
But then, what about the dangerousness of the Omicron variant? “We see that the virus circulates a lot, but that the impact is smaller on hospitalizations and for the most severe forms. But that does not mean that the virus is benign ”. He concludes, referring to the reopening of schools on Monday: “The circulation of the virus will be so important in the general population that the school is a reflection of society and no longer a driver of the epidemic”.
