The circulation of the virus on the rise in schools in the Region

The Minister of Health, Olivier Véran, acknowledged this Thursday evening during his weekly update on the circulation of the Covid-19 in France: “We are not denying that the virus can also be transmitted at school, and from school to families”.

This Friday, the crossing of data published by the Academy of Bordeaux and Public Health France tends to show greater circulation of the virus in schools in Nouvelle-Aquitaine.

  • 710 positive cases among students in the Region

According to the data stopped Thursday at 1 p.m. in the academic report, 710 cases of Covid have been detected over the last 7 days out of 577,740 students.

0.12% of all students have tested positive in the past 7 days. The national average is 0.17%.

It is 176 more positive cases in 24 hours (+ 28%). As of March 19, there were 613 positive cases among students over 7 days.

In addition to the students, it should be noted that 63 staff members (there are 51,258 in all) have tested positive in the past 7 days. Here again, the increase is significant in 24 hours (+ 15 positive cases)

  • The incidence rate is on the rise among young people

To approximate an assessment of the incidence rate among young people in the Region, we can refer to the weekly rate declined by age groups by Public Health France..

All ages combined, this rate was 160.8 positive cases per 100,000 inhabitants in week 11 (from March 15 to 21, 2021) in New Aquitaine, up 25 points compared to the previous week.

For 0–19 year olds, this rate stands at 99.8 (+16 compared to the previous week). But for 10–19 year olds, it climbs to 238.7 per 100,000 inhabitants (+41).

But the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region remains, with Brittany, one of the regions where this rate is the lowest.

  • Many more tests also

Clearly, there have never been so many Covid cases in connection with the school environment.

But there have never been so many tests carried out in schools, colleges and high schools, and whose results have only been released this week.

Public Health France therefore considers that there is “more contamination in connection with schools and / or better identification of cases in connection with the screening carried out in these establishments”. All the nuance is in the “and / or”.

Between Monday March 15 and Friday March 19, 8,111 saliva tests were carried out for students and staff of school structures in the region (out of 10,488 tests offered). 0.23% positive tests. Against 0.49% nationally.

  • 4 schools closed

Thursday, at 1 p.m., the Region had 3 closed schools (1 school, 1 college and 1 high school) out of 3199. At the end of the day, the Restou school in Biarritz was added, which was closed at least until the 31st. March included.

66 classes were closed, out of 24,428. If we observe, nationally, that the number of schools has almost doubled, it has therefore remained stable (4) in our Region.

  • And the English variant in all of this?

We test more, so we find more positive cases in schools. But we cannot ignore the progression of the English variant in our region either. It represents 79.1% of positive cases in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, all ages combined.

A slightly higher rate among the youngest: 80.4% among 0–9 year olds, 82.7% among 10–19 year olds.

In the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, where the English variant dominates at 77.8%, the reverse is true: it rises to 90.6% among 0–9 year olds but remains at 79.4% among 10–19 year olds.
