The CIA recruited informants from China, Iran and North Korea – 2024-10-03 05:43:43

The CIA has launched a new campaign to recruit informants from China, Iran and North Korea, adding to what it says has been successful efforts to recruit informants from Russia, Reuters reported, citing a CIA spokesman.

America’s top spy agency released instructions in Mandarin, Farsi and Korean on its profiles on the X, Facebook, Instagram, Telegram, LinkedIn and Dark Web platforms on how to a person contacts her in a secure way, her spokesperson said in a statement quoted by BTA.

“Our efforts on this front have been successful in Russia, and we want to make sure that individuals in other authoritarian regimes know that we are open for business,” the spokesman said, adding that the CIA is adapting to increased state restrictions and global surveillance .

The CIA’s appetite for intelligence has grown amid China’s expanding cooperation with Russia and Iran and the strengthening of China’s regional military power. Russia, China, Iran and North Korea are known in the US intelligence community as “hard targets” – countries whose governments are difficult to penetrate.

The CIA began recruiting Russian informants in 2022 by posting texts in Russian on its social media accounts about how Russians could contact the agency securely, followed in 2023 by videos.
