In football, as in politics or business, diplomacy is a virtue. And it is better, therefore, to exercise caution when denigrating an opponent. Even Pep Guardiola, who has more than one string to his bow, was trapped this week during the Champions League. After the first leg, the Manchester City coach did not hesitate to quip, in veiled terms, on the “prehistoric” style of Atletico Madrid. He particularly stigmatized the ultra-defensive game of the Colchonero club. The backlash was quick.
