The Choice and Consequences of Using WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram: Is it a Right or a Coercion?

Using WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram is a choice, not a right.

You cannot switch to another medium without social consequences. That is only possible if I can text with my family who use WhatsApp with Signal, without giving up my privacy. WhatsApp is just a social obligation if you don’t want to put yourself in social isolation. So no it is not a right, but social coercion. I’m stuck with it, even if nothing stops me from quitting.

It doesn’t have to be free either, but that ads are put in a product and then a premium tier is offered without the ads is reprehensible. I don’t mind if WhatsApp charges a monthly fee for the services, but I have a problem paying for ad filtering.

Until recently, you received life-threatening alerts from the government from Twitter, which was behind a wall. So you are forced to give up your privacy to receive notifications from the government. Fundamentally that goes wrong with the government, but to show how dependent you are on certain social media even if you could theoretically close your account at any time.
